Make a Snow Globe
Now something to do with those
empty baby food jars!
Make a magical snow globe!
Remember the scene in the Shirley Temple version of Heidi, where she is given the snow globe, only to have it smashed to bits by the evil housekeeper? I believe it was one of the first times I had seen a snow globe, and the Hollywood portrayal of the object gave it a magical quality. Inside the globe created the illusion of another world, complete with its own atmosphere and falling snow.
Today snow globes are far more common, yet still as enchanting. The
following project will allow the youngster to create his or her own snow
globe, with a bit of adult supervision.
Materials needed:
Clean, label free, baby food jar with lid
Spay paint
Glitter
Florist clay
Plastic cake decorations
Karo Syrup
Water
Hot glue
Directions:
1. Spray the outside of the lid with paint, and allow to dry.
2, Have the child press several tablespoons full of florist clay onto
the inside of the lid. Press down, and add the cake decorations, making
a scene. Use the clay to secure items firmly onto the inside of the lid.
Add or take away clay as needed.
3. Have an adult mix a solution of 3/4 parts Karo Syrup to 1/4 part
water. Carefully fill the jar as full as possible, adding about a
tablespoon of glitter. Secure the lid on the jar, dry off any excess
liquid and seal the lid with the hot glue.
4. When the glue dries, turn over and watch the snow fall!
