

1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cup flour
1 cup sugar
4 tablespoons melted shortening
4 tablespoons cocoa
1 tablespoons vanilla
Preheat oven to 350º. Butter and lightly flour a 9-inch cake pan. Dissolve baking soda and salt in buttermilk. Sift in flour and sugar. Blend well> Add cocoa to melted shortening, blend. Add cocoa-shortening and vanilla to batter. Blend thoroughly. Pour into cake pan. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
